It was a cold overcast morning with only moments between the cloud cover to see Hinemarama and the whetu. We were lucky to get a few glimpses of Takurua, Puanga and Tautoru.

At 5.45 karakia began to recognise the rising of Matariki and to pay homage to each of the whetu. It was an interactive experience this year, with the whānau asked to participate at the end of each karakia.  Everyone shared the loved ones they've lost over the last year as well as their wishes for the upcoming year.

Karanga called out into the dawn with a shared kai to complete the ceremony.
